Getting started

Your first day

A tour of the HUD, the first hour checklist, where the money comes from, where to sleep and how to ask for help. For anyone with a brand new character.

What it is

Your first day is about three things: learning what the screen is telling you, ticking off the handful of errands every new citizen does (phone, licence, car, job, bank, clothes) and meeting people. The server rewards the errands with RP Points through the Getting Started checklist, and it gives you a free car, a starter balance and a daily task board so you are never stuck for something to do. This page is the plan for the first hour or two; the pages after it go deeper on chat, money, housing, jobs and the phone.

How to start

Spawn at a public spawn, as described in Joining the server: Paleto Boulevard on the English server, or Legion Square on the Balkan server. If you have not done the tour yet, type /tutorial now: it takes about ten minutes, runs in a private copy of the city so nobody sees you practise, and pays 100 RP Points. Then type /guide to open the checklist and keep it in mind as you go.

A tour of the HUD

  • Cash and bank sit in a corner of the screen. Cash is what is in your pocket and can be robbed; bank is safe. New characters start with everything in the bank and nothing in hand.

  • Hunger and thirst drain slowly. Buy food and drink from any 24/7 store and use it from your inventory (I). Ignore them long enough and your health suffers.

  • The chat window shows speech in white, /me actions in purple, /do descriptions and out of character text in brackets. Press T to type. Everything you type without a slash is said out loud by your character.

  • Name tags show a character's name and a short number above their head. The number is their game ID and many commands take it, for example /pm 12 hello.

  • Notifications appear at the edge of the screen for bills, messages, job updates and staff replies.

  • The map is on your phone (Maps app) and on the pause menu. The minimap in the corner only shows while you carry a Portable GPS and the minimap setting in the HUD tab of /settings is on. A GPS is $200 at any 24/7, and once you have one a waypoint set anywhere shows as a GPS line on the minimap. Screenshot mode (F7) hides it along with the rest of the HUD.

Keys you will use in the first hour: T chat, M phone, I inventory, E interact with the thing in front of you (doors, ATMs, shop counters, pumps), F get in or out of a vehicle, L lock your car or house, K engine, B seatbelt, F3 free the mouse cursor, F1 this wiki, F2 the report and support panel. Where two E prompts overlap, pressing E opens a small "Choose an action" menu so you can pick the one you meant. Most keys can be changed with /keybinds.

The first hour checklist

  1. Get a phone

Walk into a mobile phone store (there is one in central Los Santos a few blocks east of Legion Square, one in Rockford Hills and one in Sandy Shores), buy a handset for $200 and a contract, then press M to set it up and claim your number. Your phone covers the plans and the apps. Checklist reward: 20 RP Points.

  2. Pass your driving test

Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles, sit the theory test and then the practical. Without a licence the police will stop you and your insurer will not touch you. Checklist reward: 35 RP Points.

  3. Collect your free car

A Blista was added to your garage the first time you played. Type /v to open the vehicle menu and bring it out, or /v find to put a waypoint on it. Park it with /vpark when you are done and it is saved where you left it. Checklist reward: 35 RP Points.

  4. Start a job

Type /jobs for the jobs hub or walk into any depot: the trucking depot (in Paleto Bay on the English server, at the Los Santos docks on the Balkan server), the LS Transit Authority bus depot, the sanitation yard, the lumber yard, the quarry or the landscaping depot. Getting a job lists them with what each one needs. Checklist reward: 25 RP Points.

  5. Visit the bank

Press E at any ATM or Fleeca counter, look at your balance and withdraw a little cash for food. Money and banking basics explains the rest. Checklist reward: 15 RP Points.

  6. Buy an outfit

Any clothing store lets you build an outfit that is saved to your wardrobe, so you can change at home later without shopping again. Checklist reward: 20 RP Points.

Finishing all six pays a further 100 RP Points. RP Points (PP) are the server's control panel currency: they buy cosmetics, name tags, crates and perks in the store, which you can open with /ppstore.

Where the money comes from

  • Your starting balance depends on the wealth tier you chose when you made the character, from $300 for a homeless start to $150,000 for a wealthy one. It is in the bank, not your pocket.

  • Jobs pay per task or per delivery straight into your bank, and the hours you spend on duty build your weekly paycheck.

  • The daily task board (/tasks) gives every character five everyday tasks a day, from a phone call to a drive to a fishing trip. Each one pays 15 to 30 RP Points and Standing XP; clear all five for 100 RP Points, 500 XP and a Lucky Wheel spin sent to your email. The board refreshes at midnight UK time.

  • /daily is a separate free scratch card that builds towards a spin over a week of play.

  • Friends you invite with /invite earn you prize draw entries as they play.

Bills for utilities and rent are taken from your bank, so keep a balance there. /bills shows what is outstanding.

Where to sleep

Nobody makes you own a home, and plenty of characters live out of a car for their first week. When you want one, the cheapest route is renting: the Dynasty 8 app on your phone (or /realestate) lists flats with the monthly rent, and a landlord can also let you a place through /lease. Finding a home compares the options. Until then, a property you can enter gives you storage and a wardrobe, and the free tour outfit is enough to look presentable.

Asking for help

There is no shame in not knowing something; every player on the server was new once.

  • /askhelper how do I refuel? sends a question to the player helper team, who answer in chat or come and find you. This is the best first stop for a gameplay question.

  • /help, /wiki or F1 opens this wiki in game, with search and every guide. /wiki fuel jumps straight to the best match.

  • /guide reopens the checklist and the City Handbook, which explains the important commands in plain language.

  • /report (or F2) is for players breaking the server rules out of character. It is not for in character crime; for that, dial 911 from your phone.

  • This wiki is searchable from the box at the top of every page, and the Discord support channels are open when you need a human.

Worked example

WORKED EXAMPLE

Maya Okafor's first hour on the English server, as she played it.

19:02 Spawns on Paleto Boulevard. Reads the chat for a minute to get a feel for it, then presses T and types "Evening" to a couple outside the shops. They point her towards the bank and the 24/7 up the road.

19:06 Presses E at the Fleeca counter in Paleto Bay, sees $5,000 in the bank and withdraws $300 for the day. The checklist ticks "Visit the bank" and pays 15 RP Points.

19:12 Walks up to 24/7 Paleto Boulevard and buys a sandwich, a water and a Portable GPS for $200. The minimap appears in the corner as soon as the GPS is in her inventory. She eats from her inventory.

19:20 Types /jobs and reads about the public jobs. The trucking depot needs a driving licence she does not have yet, so she takes a lift from the couple to the lumber yard in Paleto Forest, which needs nothing but the walk, and takes a $120 clearing contract. 25 RP Points.

19:55 Back in town, she stops at Binco, builds a jacket and jeans outfit and saves it. 20 RP Points.

20:05 The couple drive her down to the mobile store in Sandy Shores. She buys a $200 handset and a Rolling 30 Basic contract, presses M, follows the setup and gets her number. 20 RP Points.

20:30 Opens /tasks: "Make a phone call" and "Drive 5 km" are waiting. She calls the number the couple gave her and gets invited to a bar in Paleto Bay tomorrow night. The driving test and her free Blista can wait until then.

What you see at the end of the hour: the checklist at four of six, about $4,560 in the bank after the job pay and the phone, a working minimap, a phone with one contact, and a reason to come back tomorrow. On the Balkan server the same evening would start at Legion Square, with a phone store a few blocks away.
