Getting started

Joining the server

What you need, creating your account on the UCP, linking Discord, installing FiveM, your first launch and choosing where to spawn. For anyone new to the server.

What it is

Roleplay Project runs on FiveM, a free modification for Grand Theft Auto V on PC that lets you join custom servers. There is no application, no quiz and no waiting list: you make an account on the User Control Panel (the UCP, at roleplayproject.net), link your Discord, install FiveM and connect. The whole thing takes about fifteen minutes, most of which is FiveM downloading the server's files the first time you join.

This page walks through every screen in order. If you have played on another FiveM roleplay server the steps will feel familiar; if you have not, nothing here assumes you have.

How to start

You need three things before you begin:

  • A legitimate copy of Grand Theft Auto V for PC (Steam, Epic or Rockstar), installed and launched at least once.

  • A Discord account. The server uses Discord for announcements, support tickets and faction communities, and linking it is what activates your account.

  • An email address you can read, because the UCP sends a verification code during sign-up.

Step by step

  1. Create your UCP account

Open roleplayproject.net/apply in a browser. The join flow asks one question per screen: your email, the six digit code the UCP emails you, a username, a password and your agreement to the server rules. Pick a username you are happy to keep; it is your account name, not your character's name, and other players never see it.

  2. Link Discord

The last screen of the join flow asks you to link Discord. Click the button, approve the request on Discord's side and you are returned to the UCP with the account approved. Linking is what activates the account, so do not skip it. If you closed the tab too early, log in to the UCP and link Discord from Settings.

  3. Join the Discord server

The UCP dashboard and the site footer both carry the Discord invite. Join it, read the welcome channel and stay in it. Patch notes, events, downtime notices and support all happen there, and you will be asked to open a ticket there if anything goes wrong with your account.

  4. Install FiveM

Download FiveM from fivem.net, run the installer and let it find your GTA V install. Launch it once so it finishes its own setup, then close it. Make sure GTA V itself is fully updated, because FiveM refuses to start against an out of date game.

  5. Connect

Open FiveM, press F8 to open the console and type connect play.roleplayproject.net, then press Enter. You can also search for Roleplay Project in the FiveM server list and click it. The first connection downloads the server's files, which can take several minutes on a slow line; the loading screen shows the progress and a few tips while you wait.

  6. Log in with your UCP account

When the loading screen finishes you see the sign-in panel. Enter the UCP username and password you just created. If you have switched on two-factor authentication in the UCP you will be asked for the six digit code from your authenticator app, with a box to trust the device for 30 days.

  7. Make a character

The character panel lets you create up to ten characters. Give the new one a first name and a surname (letters only, two to fifty characters each) and a date of birth that makes them between 18 and 75.

  8. Build your look and pick an outfit

The appearance editor sets your face, hair and body. Take your time; you can change clothes at any clothing store later but faces are yours for good. On the outfit screen pick one of the starter presets or the basic outfit. Everything you buy later is saved to your wardrobe.

  9. Choose a spawn

The spawn panel shows a map with pins grouped into Recent, Properties, Hospitals and Public, plus any limited time event spawns. A brand new character has no properties and no recent location, so choose a public spawn. Both servers offer the same ones:

    What

    Both servers

    Public spawns

Paleto Bay (Paleto Boulevard), Paleto Bay Medical Center, Sandy Shores Medical Center

    Best first choice

Paleto Bay: Paleto Boulevard is where new characters arrive and where the tutorial tour starts

Click a pin, read the preview and confirm. English and Balkan servers explains why the city services are in Paleto Bay.

  10. Finish character setup

The first time your new character arrives in the city, the character setup panel opens with six short steps: background, personality, medical, finances, citizenship and chat. The finances step sets your wealth tier, which decides your starting bank balance and credit history and is meant to match the story you want to play:

    Tier

    Starting bank balance

    Meant for

    Homeless / Welfare

    $300

A character starting from nothing who plays the struggle honestly

    Working Class

    $5,000

Modest savings, needs a job quickly, lives within their means

    Middle Class

    $50,000

Enough for a modest flat and a car, a professional background

    Wealthy Family

    $150,000

One per account, and only if the story justifies it

Picking a wealthy character just to farm cash is a bannable offence, so choose the tier that fits the person you are going to play.

The medical step is optional. Pick up to five conditions and up to four allergies your character already lives with, or press "Skip: no conditions or allergies". A condition with a regular medicine gets a repeat prescription automatically, the first supply free. Hospitals and medicine explains how that works.

After you spawn

The first thing you see is the city and a short welcome. Two things worth doing straight away:

  • Type /tutorial for a private guided tour that teaches chat, /me, /do, the phone and driving, and pays 100 RP Points when you finish it. On the English server it starts and ends on Paleto Boulevard; on the Balkan server it starts by Legion Square and drops you at the airport. /skiptutorial leaves it, permanently and without the reward, so only skip if you really know the ropes.

  • Type /guide for the Getting Started checklist and the City Handbook. The checklist pays RP Points for each early milestone (a phone, a driving licence, a car, a job, a bank visit and an outfit) and 100 more when it is complete.

A free Blista is added to your garage the first time you play; recall it with /v once you have been to the DMV, because driving without a licence is a quick way to meet the police. The next page, Your first day, picks up from here.

Worked example

WORKED EXAMPLE

Maya has never played a roleplay server. She makes her UCP account at roleplayproject.net/apply on Tuesday evening, types in the code the UCP emails her, picks the username mayaplays and a password, ticks the rules and links her Discord when the last screen asks. The UCP tells her the account is active. She joins the Discord from the dashboard link and reads the welcome channel.

FiveM is already installed for another server, so she opens it, presses F8 and types connect play.roleplayproject.net. The loading screen shows a city being drawn line by line while about four minutes of files download. The sign-in panel accepts mayaplays and her password.

She plays on the English server. She creates Maya Okafor, born 14 March 2001. In the appearance editor she spends ten minutes on the face, picks the "Casual" starter outfit and, on the spawn map, clicks Paleto Bay.

Character setup opens as she arrives. She writes a short backstory, picks a few personality traits, presses "Skip: no conditions or allergies" on the medical step because Maya is healthy, and chooses Working Class for $5,000 in the bank.

What you see: Paleto Boulevard in the afternoon, a small HUD with cash and bank in the corner, and a chat window that already has a few lines of white speech in it from two people talking outside the shops. A welcome notification suggests /tutorial. She types it, plays the ten minute tour, earns 100 RP Points and comes back to the boulevard knowing how to say hello. On the Balkan server the same evening would have started at Legion Square in downtown Los Santos.
