Getting started

Getting a job

The public jobs with where each one starts, what it needs and what it pays, the trades, faction and business duty, and how player companies hire. For anyone with a character.

What it is

Work in the city comes in four flavours. Public jobs are run by the city: walk into a depot, rent or borrow a vehicle and get paid per task, with no application and no boss. Trades such as fishing and hunting are self employed: you buy the kit, sell what you catch and answer to nobody. Faction duty is for the police, fire, EMS and other organisations you join through their own process. Company work means being hired by a player-owned business, clocking on with a timesheet and drawing wages from their payroll. New characters usually start with a public job because it pays the same day and teaches the map.

Every job pays into your bank. Hours on duty also count towards a weekly paycheck, which needs eight hours of duty in the week to qualify.

How to start

Type /jobs to open the jobs hub. It shows the trucking and bus depots, your active shift, recent earnings and any ban from a job type. For the other public jobs walk to the depot marker on the map; each one has a blip once you are nearby. Trucking checks your licence class at the board, and the police check everyone else on the road, so pass your test before you turn up.

Step by step

  1. Open the jobs hub

Type /jobs. Read the Overview tab: it tells you whether you already have a shift running, whether you are banned from a job type (returning a rented vehicle late earns a seven day ban) and what you earned recently.

  2. Go to the depot

Walk to the marker. Trucking and bus depots open a board when you press E; the smaller jobs give you a prompt at the marker to start a shift or take a contract.

  3. Rent or collect the vehicle

Public jobs lend a vehicle for the shift. Buses and mowers are free; trucks and cabs cost a rental fee that is taken when the vehicle appears and refunded if it fails to spawn. At the trucking and bus depots you are responsible for it: if you leave the vehicle you have three hours to get back in it or return it, and failing to return it bans you from that job type for seven days.

  4. Work the task

Follow the HUD. Trucking shows the next stop, the deadline and the load limits; the bus shows the route and the next stop; sanitation shows the bags or dumpsters left on the route; mowing shows the patches. Press E at each stop, bag or bay.

  5. Get paid

Pay lands in your bank as each task completes, with a completion bonus at the end of a route where the job has one. /jobstatus shows the current shift and /quitjob or /endshift ends it.

  6. Return the vehicle

Drive back to the depot and press E to hand the vehicle in. Any deposit comes back and the shift closes cleanly. Only then take another contract or log off.

Working for a company

Player-owned companies do real hiring. /hiring (also /jobboard) opens the company job board with every open vacancy, the pay on offer and a button to apply. A company can also invite you directly with /companyinvite. Once you are in:

  • You can belong to up to three companies and switch which one is active from /company.

  • Your rank comes with permissions the owner sets: who can hire, pay, see the books or use the stash.

  • Clock on inside the business with /bduty. Your timesheet records the hours and the owner pays wages from the company account; a business with customers also earns while you are on the till. On the English server, business duty inside Los Santos is closed while the evacuation order is in force (until 2 October 2026 unless extended). See Los Santos evacuation.

  • /companyleave quits; the owner can disband the company from /company.

The Companies guide covers ranks, payroll and the activity log in detail, and the Factions and the MDC guide explains how the police, fire and EMS recruit and what /duty does once you are in.

Worked example

WORKED EXAMPLE

Maya Okafor's first trucking shift on the English server, summarised. The Trucking guide has the full version of every step.

  1. She passed her driving test yesterday, so she has the class C licence a van needs. She types /jobs, reads the Trucking tab and drives her Blista to the Paleto Bay Trucking Depot on the east side of town. Pressing E at the desk opens the contract board on the Contracts tab.

  2. A new driver sees only local parcel and dry goods contracts; everything else shows a lock with the reason (level, endorsement, licence). She picks a two-stop parcels run and chooses a van rental for $450.

  3. The van appears in the rental bay just south of the desk and the fee leaves her bank. The bay only takes one vehicle at a time, so she drives straight out to let the next driver in. She loads the parcels by hand from the depot stack, pressing E at each one, and the HUD shows the next stop, the distance and the deadline.

  4. She drives at the limit, parks in the marked bay, gets out and presses E to unload. The first stop pays on the spot. The second stop pays the rest and offers a backhaul of dry goods to the depot, which she accepts.

  5. Back at the depot she unloads, returns the van and the shift closes.

What you see: pay for both stops and the backhaul against a $450 rental, trucking XP towards level 2, a records entry for the run, and "Start a job" ticked on the Getting Started checklist for 25 RP Points. On the Balkan server the same run starts at the Los Santos Trucking Depot at the docks.
